As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, there might be changes or updates to Adobe Illustrator in the 2023 version. However, the general process for using PMS (Pantone Matching System) colors in Adobe Illustrator remains quite consistent across versions. Here’s a general guide:
Method 1: Applying PMS Colors
- Open Illustrator: Launch Adobe Illustrator 2023 and open the document you’re working on.
- Access the Swatches Panel:
- If the Swatches panel is not visible, go to
Window > Swatches
to open it.
- If the Swatches panel is not visible, go to
- Load Pantone Swatches:
- In the Swatches panel, click on the panel options menu (top right corner of the panel).
- Choose “Open Swatch Library” and then navigate to “Color Books” and select “PANTONE + Solid Coated” or another PANTONE library based on your needs.
- Select PMS Color:
- After opening the PANTONE swatch library, you can select a specific PMS color by clicking on it. This adds the color to your Swatches panel.
- Apply PMS Color:
- Select the object or text you want to apply the PMS color to.
- Click on the PMS color in the Swatches panel to apply it.
Method 2: Creating Custom PMS Colors
- Open Swatches Panel:
- If the Swatches panel is not visible, go to
Window > Swatches
to open it.
- If the Swatches panel is not visible, go to
- Click on the New Swatch Icon:
- In the Swatches panel, click the “New Swatch” icon (looks like a page with a folded corner).
- Choose Pantone Solid Coated:
- Set the Color Type to “Spot Color” and choose “PANTONE Solid Coated” from the Color Mode dropdown.
- Pick PMS Color:
- Select the PMS color you want by clicking on it.
- Name and Save:
- Give your custom PMS color a name.
- Click “OK” to save the new swatch.
- Apply PMS Color:
- Select the object or text you want to apply the custom PMS color to.
- Click on the custom PMS color swatch in the Swatches panel to apply it.
Remember, PMS colors are often used in print design, and you should ensure that your document is set up for print with the appropriate color mode (CMYK) and that you communicate the specific PMS colors to your printer if necessary. Always refer to the latest Adobe Illustrator documentation for any changes or updates in the 2023 version.
